You don't need any fancy equipment, just a lot of patience. You can start bird watching simply by relaxing in your backyard or taking a stroll in your local park and paying attention to the different types of birds. If you're not sure what kind of birds are all in your area, there are so many different resources online. Just do an online search for birds in your area, you may be surprised how many different types of birds are hanging around your home, especially during the summer months.
If you get into bird watching and find that you really enjoy it, you can always start to keep a journal of the types of birds you see and where. You may also want to invest in a pair of binoculars, you can start with an inexpensive pair and upgrade when (and if) you feel like it.
Bird watching is also a great way to get your children interested in science, especially biology. You can look up the different types of birds you come across and take notes on their traits, what they eat, how big they get, etc...
So, give bird watching a chance and see how "tweet" it can be.
