DIY Solar Fountain Planter

The DIY solar fountain planter was a big social media hit this past spring/summer season and we had to make one ourselves. The concept and design is really quite simple and we're going to go through the steps that we took to create our planter and give you some alternate ideas as well.

The three main items you'll need to make a solar fountain planter are a large flower pot, a bowl or smaller flower pot (with no holes in it) and a solar fountain that will fit in the bowl or smaller flower pot. We had an old wooden barrel planter that we sanded and stained white for our large flower planter. We were able to find a smaller white flower pot at Walmart that did not have any holes in it (you would have to punch the holes out, so it worked out perfect for our project) and we ordered our solar fountain from Amazon.

Below is the solar fountain (or one that is really close to the one we got) for our project.

You may be wondering the size of our containers but you can use planters and or bowls that you have on hand to make this project - that's the fun part, you can customize this project to use what you have or design it how you would like to fit the space you are looking to put your solar fountain planter in.

One tip that we did come across while creating our project is that if you have a really large planter for your base like we do, you don't have to fill the whole planter with dirt. We were able to use a 5 gallon bucket (put it in upside down) in the middle of our large planter and just placed our potting soil around the inside of the bucket and we were able to set our smaller flower pot on top of the base of the bucket. You could use a smaller planter inside your larger planter for the same effect. Some people placed cardboard or empty plastic bottles in their larger planters so they would not have to fill the whole large planter with potting soil.
